THE FRAY / Quenya Names

off topic chattery

Postby Jordan~ on 18 Mar 2011, 06:00

I'm bored and trying to get better at Quenya (I'm sort of half-learning it), so if anyone would like me to translate any names into Quenya and render them in Quenya-mode Tengwar, just post them in this thread and I'll reply with the meaning in English and the translation in the Latin alphabet and Tengwar.

e.g. I did me, my friends and my parents:

I don't think it's so much showing as you can't see me for it.

I've been fascinated with Tolkein since the early 70's when I first read The Lord of the Rings. I'm pretty sure I've read it over a dozen times since then. And, although I've read books about the languages he created, I've never tried seriously to learn them. I applaud your efforts. :notworthy:

Realised I've not done Joanna herself!
Time to put that right:

It's quite a bit like learning Latin - vocabulary follows grammar. Once you know the grammatical rules of word construction, it's just a matter of picking up the roots and making words as you need them, only with Quenya there are far fewer roots and a bit less grammar.

Ooh yay!
I made the mistake of learning vocab before grammar in swedish. When I was living there, I got this extensive vocabulary, but I had no formal training, so my grammar was terrible. With this summer's month at camp, my grammar should improve tenfold.
