Over the past few days I've watched Get Real, Dr. Strangelove, How to Train Your Dragon, Best Worst Movie, Fish Story and Eden à l'Ouest, all but Dr. Strangelove for the first time. I basically got a bunch of films that were well-received on Rotten Tomatoes that caught my eye. My thoughts on each in brief: Get Real - A coming out story set in England. Enjoyable, though the process was much less cinematic for me and how come I didn't get any of the action that seems to be ubiquitous in this sort of film? Dr. Strangelove - Universally recognised as brilliant and I've seen it before; enough said. How to Train Your Dragon - Cute, fun and sweet. One of the better animated movies I've seen recently. Best Worst Movie - Very interesting for anyone who likes cult cinema. A weird film about a very weird film. Fish Story - Japanese film with an ambitious plot; pretty well realised. I recommend it, since it doesn't seem to be very well known. Japanophilia not required to enjoy. Eden à l'Ouest - Engaging and enjoyable. I didn't understand about 9/10 of the dialogue, since it's variously in Greek, English, German and French, but I think it's meant to be that way. The ending is a little peculiar and anticlimactic, but I wouldn't say it ruins the film.
OK, I watched it. First of all, I never heard of him. Why do you say the film was brilliant? I think Josh's head was pretty fucked up. I'm not saying that he was wrong about the way things will turn out. Just look around you at all of the people who are uploading their lives onto the internet. But, that doesn't make it brilliant.
The film is brilliant as a commentary on internet culture and reflects fascinatingly on wider society. Josh isn't brilliant, the film is. It also happens to be brilliantly put together and paced, so I was entertained while being thought-provoked (if that's a word). The part where he asks the woman to trace her hand up her arm with the speed of the knife she had used to attempt suicide, and it shows her crying, I was completely shellshocked. That she would go through that for the sake of living in Quiet is insane. Just an example by way of a small part of the film I liked. What do you have to say against it?
Of course, you are right about the thought-proving. And, yes it was put together quite well. So, this was the beginning of the 'reality show' craze. I wondered where it all began. I'm always baffled by the things some people are willing to do in public, and the vast numbers of people driven to watch those people make complete fools of themselves. I find it all disturbing. It's not that I'm religious, although I was in the past. I just don't enjoy watching people being hurt or losing their dignity, even when it's voluntary, when it is happening for real. I mean, I can watch the most violent movies, where people are being slaughtered by the thousands...as long as it is make believe. I won't watch any of those Faces of Death type movies. The same applies to people making fools of themselves. Watching actors portraying something is no problem, but watching real people doing those same things is can be disturbing. The worse the events, the more disturbing it is to me. Eventually it reaches a level where I just refuse to watch. I could, but I won't.
I completely understand, and I think that the film is so good because it is so disturbing, it plumbs the depths of what we as human beings can be willing to do in order to have our 15 minutes of fame. We live in public.
Mad Men. I watched the first season when it came out but then kinda lost interest before the second. Now I'm starting afresh and I want to watch them alllllll.
Watching the 2008 film version of Brideshead Revisited. It's pretty good - apparently the filmmaker shares my interpretation of the novel, because the Flytes come over as horrible villains and Charles as a traitor complicit in Sebastian's downfall. It deviates quite a bit from the book specifically to cast Charles as a wretched traitor.
