It was really good, yeah. Very well directed, very visually striking, and Natalie Portman dances very convincingly. The Tchaikovsky soundtrack sucks you in. All in all, it's a very unsettling portrayal of schizophrenia.

I had no idea that Natalie Portman could dance like that. Just to make sure that she really can dance, I looked on her website and saw that ballet is listed as a hobby. A hobby? Wish I was even half that good at any of my hobbies.

Apparently the actresses were in training for a long time before shooting started. I'm guessing she'd done a bit of ballet on the side and she spent a year or two being trained up to professional level.
Why do I know so goddamn much about a movie I only saw because I wandered into a room to put a CD in a suitcase when a friend and someone I don't know were about to leave to see it?

I loved the dance scenes. Ballet can be so beautiful. I think that my love for ballet must come from my Mom's side of the family. They were Gays.

It made me re-evaluate my stance on dating gay male ballet dancers and then spoiled them for me.

My brothers (3) are all half-Gay, and none of them are into ballet, design, cooking, hairstyling, or Victorian antiques. We each inherited our half-Gayness. My dear, sweet mother was totally Gay...until she married my father. Anyway, I like ballet because I love to see tiny women prance around on their toes. And, I like design...when it is done by other people. I do love to cook, although I've never tried my hand at 'French cooking'. I did try hairstyling (on the head of my second wife), but I absolutely hate the chemicals. And, I adore the art of the Victorian era tremendously more than I do the antiques.

I always dismissed male ballet dancers as too delicate and effete, but they're actually very strong and some of the moves are really powerful and dominating.

I've been a fan of Nureyev and Baryshnikov since the 60's and 70's. Because of my passion at the time for weight training, I was amazed at their strength, that they did what they did with seemingly no effort at all. It's funny that it didn't occur to me for a long, long time that some male dancers were gay, or that they might be sexually appealing to some men. You might say that I was quite naive. Anyway, I still love to watch Baryshnikov dance...so I just watched a number of youtube clips, including .

Both vids were interesting. The first, because of the 3 Stooges humor choreographed and set to music, and the second, because of it's complexity and bizarreness. Neither one compels me to seek out more of the same.
