Despite what my critics say about me, I rarely say much about my private life. This will be an exception. I've been in constant pain for a decade or more for lower back/disc problems. Well, my insurance finally allowed me to get a lumbar fusion on the 12th of Jan., and I was released on the 16th. So, I'm home now. The level of pain can be as high as a 10, on a scale of 1 to 10, although the pain meds tend to keep the level at a six or seven, which is about what I've lived with for the last 10 years or so. So, why did I put this in the "This is the woo life thread"? Because it is a "pleasure" to be able to stand or walk for more than five or ten minutes without my legs becoming so numb that I have to sit for a moment to allow feeling to return. Plus, I know that, in time, the pain will diminish greatly, and I will be able to resume a somewhat normal life.

How do they measure pain, Polli? And did this lumbar fusion cause more pain?

Glad you are getting some relief from that, Polli - I know how physically exhausting that kind of pain can be.

They just ask you to compare the pain level to what you have experienced, with 10 being so severe that you can hardly stand it, and 1 being almost complete absence of pain. So, it is highly subjective . Everyone reacts to pain in different ways. Does the lumbar fusion cause more pain? At first, because they cut an incision in you back about 6 inches long, spread the muscles apart, and remove the bad disc, drill holes in the vertebrae to be fused, put a spacer between them with some growth hormone to stimulate new bone growth, and then attach a metal plate with screws to hold the two vertebrae together. Then, close it back up with a bunch of metal staples. What fun! Without the pain meds I'd probably cry like a baby most of the time. Even with the pain meds it doesn't get much better than a 5 or 6.

as i said to polli before, it's not only about being old or not, i'm quite young (well 30) as my bf (37) and we both suffering from hard back pain, and a friend of mine was surged ten years ago (30) for the same reason as polli, but know he almost breakdance keep on polli soon you'll breakdance too!
