The last 'in your arms' of No Provenance LITERALLY KILLS ME every time I listen to it. I don't know why, but I obsessively love how her voice sounds there.
Go Long Kingfisher In California You and Me, Bess Occident Baby Birch Good Intentions Paving Company
I skip over '81, No Provenance, and Esme more than I'd like to admit. I really loved the older, live recordings of Esme, so I don't know why I don't like it as much anymore. Maybe I wore myself out on it.
Yes I have become a little bored with the songs that were played live early on (Esme, Baby Birch and Ribbon Bows). They're still awesome songs, just heard them too many times while I was waiting for HOOM to come along.
And every little gust that chances through Will dance in the dust of me and you
I feel bad about being dissatisfied with songs that I initially liked that she changed, but I've come to realize that I really don't like the album version of Ribbon Bows as much as I liked early piano versions. The lyrics to it are in my head all the time, though. I'm sure it would be a favorite if I weren't comparing it to older live recordings.
agree with esme, i looooooved the early lived version, and when i listen it on the record...nothing, no thrill, no eemotion, don't know why, is the interpretation? the osund mix? the fact that i listen to it during years? never be bored with baby birch, so amazing... i love 81, love the fact that's sounds like bang n' gunnesax jo , i loved this joanna so much that i'm pleased to hear her again, and i'm touched by the lyrics. no provenance is just...unnecessary, don't dislike it but not like it, it's like this song doesn't exist. a lot of peopl here like paving company and i don't understand why, it's like people who like "pagan poetry", "bachelorette" bjork's song, i hate those songs! comercial and over diva feelings expression...
I agree that No Provenance is unnecessary. I just... Don't know. It feels so weird for there to be Joanna songs that I skip over, but that one just isn't doing it for me.
I love Good Intentions Paving Company! It's so fun and upbeat (in my opinion). It does seem to be one you either love or don't care for, though.
Thank you, Milki! I've never liked wearing hats, but I fell in love with that one.
No Provenance unnecessary! I feel that song so much, one of the most beautiful songs on the album in my opinion.
My least favorites are Occident and Soft as Chalk. I love them but not as the same level as GIPV, Baby Birch, In California, No Provenance, Have One On Me or Esme.
I love No Provenance! It's so dreamy and the lyrics are beautiful. The way she sings certain parts is quite sexy, I love the way she sings "The grass was tall, and strung with burrs"
And every little gust that chances through Will dance in the dust of me and you
Which song really annoys me is "Go long", I mean, I know I would LOVE it, but the sound is terrible on the CD version of HOOM, the vocals are sooo low and the whole song sounds so muffled. I always notice that when I listen to HOOM on the train, I neither can understand what she sings nor can I hear the harp or cora, whereas I have no problems with all the other songs.
My favorite has turned out to be No Provenance. It was the song that seemed most impenetrable at first, but it opened itself up one day rather majestically as I was walking across campus from my room to class. I am overwhelmed by the meaning that saturates the entire piece -- it is absolutely seductive and entrancing. The poetry is right on, hits the truth of its situation so aptly, and as if in a turn of Heideggerian phrase, it obscures itself as soon as it is pursued for speculation. The song is as lithe as a dream, but it is so heavy with tragedy. What appears to be more tragic is that no one seems to be talking about this song.
I can't really pick out least favourites- I don't love Does Not Suffice- the first verses seem too simplistic, to me talking about materials of coats for half a verse seems crass. However:
You saw me rise to our occasion And so deny the evidence Caused me to burn and twist and grimace against you Like something caught on a barbed wire fence
so i've been listening to the album a whole lot lately after taking a long break. i've got to say that i really rarely listen to the second disc. here are the favorites:
easy have one on me good intentions paving company baby birch soft as chalk esme (never listened to the early versions, but i think it's so beautiful. i drove home and cried to it today). kingfisher
but really almost all of it is beautiful. don't care much at all for '81
