I haven't been around much as I've been stressing out trying to get my application to go back to school ready. I think I finally have it mostly ready. I just need to gather everything together and send it in, but I'm having trouble making that commitment. I guess I am still trying to decide between graphic design and web design. Does anyone on here work in/have any experience with either and have any insight for me? I just really want something where I can get a job, preferably one where interaction with humans (at least in person) is kept at a minimum. I feel like web design might have more opportunities because print is dying, but graphic design is broader and covers more stuff. It probably doesn't really matter that much because I will hopefully be able to take classes in both since I don't need to take any gen ed's. But I have to choose something to put on my application and I am the worst, most agonized decision-maker in the entire universe. I really hope this ends up being a good decision.

i don't want to influence, but the only ones i know working in webd are straving and work on their computer alone by night, the only one i know in graphicd lives in a AD loft and work with clients...too much people in webd, not enough REALLY qualified in graphicd, but i'm not an expert
I think what Milki is saying is accurate... I don't know how things are in your part of the country, but in Oregon the graphic design market is oversaturated, and I imagine the web design market is similar. In Portland there are many people with graphic design degrees who are having trouble get barista jobs, much less jobs in their own field.
Yeah, I've had several people tell me similar things. But I feel like I've been hearing similar things about just about every field these days. The only things that are supposed "guarantees" are things in the medical field, in which I unfortunately have zero interest (and isn't a guarantee either--I knew a girl struggling to find a job in nursing even though we supposedly need nurses all the time) . So I don't really know what's best to do. I might take some programming classes and see how much I can stand that, because it sounds like that field's a little less saturated, just because it's so specialized and technical.
the most tecnical you can be, the less creative you can be, better will you find a job, no kiddin', i know that cinema, photo, journalism etc...sectors need really good technicians in FX programs, adobe creative suite, plus motion, plus maya, plus indesign plus...you know
I'm trying to learn more about the things milki (so much better than ode to) mentioned, even if I will never actually use them to earn money. I just love that movie FX stuff!
Well, see, I figure learning any kind of graphics/web design stuff could at least help me in my own personal stuff. If I can design rad flyers/album art/websites/etc, it can help me promote my own music without having to hire somebody or bug the crap out of a friend who knows how to do that stuff. I guess I'm trying to find a balance between something I might enjoy and something that's useful.

Auugh I went out and took too much shit and consequently I feel like shit. And my poor cats are waiting for someone sensible and compus mentis to come and look after them and I'm too out of it to fill that role. I hope I remember this, I feel poisoned.
One of the guys who worked for me in Korea got drunk on just about every night. Every morning he would wake up with a really bad headache, swearing that he would never touch that stuff again. I hope you are better at that than he was.
Even when I feel awful I never swear I'm not gonna do the things I do again, cuz I know I won't stick to it. Actually except for one thing that I swore I wouldn't do again, and I haven't.
I'm really bummed out because the kid I tutor hates our tutoring sessions and is so behind that it makes me really nervous for him. He's 12 years old but he can hardly read. I went through a list of various words to see what sounds he has trouble with. Some of the results: "woe" he read as "wore", "least" as "largest", "halt" as "helate", "mew" as "magwa", "lodge" as "lob" and "orphan" as "ohan". I really think he doesn't have a good idea what letters make what sounds and has no idea how to sound stuff out (hence adding vowels in, like at the ends of words, or between the "l" and "t" in halt). He's not picking up on stuff I'm teaching him nearly as fast as my other student, and he can't distinguish between the "v" and "b" sound and the "m" and "n" sounds (when I ask him to make up a word that ends in a "v" sound, he does "b" sounds after "b" sound, even when I point out the difference to him). I just don't know what to do. He's so far behind that I can't imagine he's learned much in school considering he can't read any of the material. Even if he learns to read this summer, which I can hopefully accomplish, he'll still be so behind material-wise because of the years and years in which he couldn't read or write. I don't understand what they do with him at school. How is he in seventh grade? I know this isn't all the school's fault -- parents have to take responsibility, but how can they pass him so that he's taking seventh grade classes even though he essentially can't read? Just makes me feel sad and helpless.
I also really, really hate it that the army treats my boyfriend like a prisoner. I've spoken to him for 12 minutes over the last month and a half and letters are infrequent and short and written only after lights out. I know I should've expected this, but I'm not cool with it and it's making me very resentful towards the army.
It sounds like the kid needs remedial lessons, not tutoring. Like, from an educational expert in phonetics. But I don't suppose he can hope for that unless he has rich parents. , ...
