I'd say The Beatles are more important in terms of the history of music, but give me Joanna anyday

I've never enjoyed the Beatles.
I understand that they were important, but I don't like any sort of "classic rock".

Joanna's in 5th place for me in terms of play counts,
but probably much higher in terms of actual time spent listening.

Joanna is #1, by far. I never got the Beatles either. Number 2 in play counts is probably munly, and number 3 Raspy.

I can see ya on the lyrics, but their composition is what makes me love them so much. They are song-writing powerhouses, and whether collaborating or not, I think the songs on their own still stand as some of the best things written. Also, we wouldn't have rock and roll or pop music as we have known it over the past few decades without them. You can check out this thing that has five seconds of every number one single from wayyyy back in the day to today, and notice how radically everything changes once The Beatles arrive:

But I hate the Stones too, as well as most classic rock. It's not even the same thing. The stones wrote shitty I-IV-V songs any idiot could have written (I am exaggerating here, but....); on the other hand, check out some of The Beatles songs. They did fucked up stuff with chord progressions, and considering the context and time period, what they did even in their earlier years is shocking and progressive, and somehow still incredibly catchy!

Someday, Joanna may surpass The Beatles for me. She sure has matched them for consistency. But their catalog is just so much larger. Who knows, she may pull a David Bowie, and we may see the quality of her work drop off precipitously. Let's just pray that doesn't happen.

I don't like the Beatles, but I really, really, really HATE the Rolling Stones.
They are on my musical black-list along with Bob Dylan, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Bruce Springsteen, and U2.
Altogether, they are some of the most overrated/annoying artists I've heard.

and woo life too because I finally got past my obvious mental disorganization and learned to solve a Rubik's cube this weekend!

I agree about most of that list of overrated artists, and think you should really add in Muse, but I love The Stones, The Beatles and especially Bobby D- madness to doubt their brilliance or at least their importance in forming music as we hear it today. Just as influential as hipster favourites Velvet Underground of My Bloody Valentine (I love both)

Muse... I think my brain automatically blocks them out. Can't stand them.

I understand why Bob Dylan was important, but I really can't get myself to even bear his music. For me, he has the worst voice besides Neil Young.

It's not about how 'good' his voice is (although the more you listen to it the more you appreciate it), as you say his protest songs were defining of an era, but also his love songs are beautiful and heartbreaking, he set the precedent for brilliant lyricism everywhere, as far as I'm concerned. Maybe you'll come round some time, Dylan seriously is such a g.

I had the same problem with Bob Dylan, but it was covers of him that got me hooked. His voice kinda annoyed me too, as did the sometimes obnoxious harmonica. However, when you hear covers, you can hear the fantastic song that is hidden underneath, and in my case, I eventually came to appreciate his performances of the songs as well. I even grew to love his voice and the sometimes-obnoxious harmonica.

I always grow to love voices I initially hated. Like Joanna. Also, the first time I heard Karen Dalton I got so annoyed I turned it off, and now that same song is one of my favorites (Katie Cruel!!! -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=raLXnnlPI_I)

Did you just say \'Bobby D\', tom? really? really? and you called him a \'g\'? Only black people can call somebody a \'g\'.
I love gothrock faves, even though most goth singers can\'t sing for shit. Like Anna-Varney Cantodea from Sopor Aeternus is not a good singer. But I love her (him?). I can\'t stand bob dylan because is music is so meh. Also, harmonica makes my skin crawl.
